Creating a Frame Using Negative Space With Dies
By Leah

Hello crafty friends! Today I want to share a tutorial with you on one way you can utilize the negative space portion, or cut out portion of your dies. I’ll be showing you how you can create a frame using this technique. Let’s get started!

First you’ll want to select your dies. I am using Fancy Lables 2, the largest die and then the next size down. You also want to select two kinds of paper. For my paper I chose a solid color cardstock that will be the bottom layer and a patterned paper from the Spring Lilacs paper pad for the top layer. I found it easiest for this type of frame to cut the papers to the same size. Mine are cut to 5 1/2″ x 4 1/4″.

You’ll want to die cut your top layer first using your largest die. Since the die I chose is quite big I centered mine so that it will be the main focus of my card.

After you have die cut the top layer, position your bottom layer paper under the die cut layer. Then position your smaller die in the center of your negative space from the previous die cut. If you are using a Big Shot the Magnetic Platform is really fabulous for this! If you don’t have one, use a bit of washi or painters tape to hold your die in place so it doesn’t shift while cutting.

After you die cut your second layer this is what your frame should look like. Now you are ready to create your project.

For my card I chose to work with the gorgeous Spring Lilacs Stamp set. I used my Silhouette Cameo to cut out the die for the lilac and butterflies. After stamping I colored them with Copic markers. The banner and my sentiment comes from the A Lovely Birthday set and the little banners in the top left corner are from Whimsical Banners. I finished everything off with a die cut border, pearls and in the middle of the flowers some glossy accents with a bit of clear glitter. I hope you enjoyed today’s tutorial and I can’t wait to see what you create! Have a wonderful day.
